Baroque Faux Pearl Hinged Side Comb

Ref: VT-0905-002

This is a neo Baroque side comb at its most elaborate and beautiful. It was probably made from the late 1950s onward. It wasalmost certainly made in the USA, although it is not marked. It has a clear Lucite comb mount with split prongs and a hinged heading which rotates, and is typical of the decade.

The ornate design is based upon a formalised wreath in which marquise shaped faux pearls forming the leaves contrast with small spherical clear ones in the bunches of fruit. This combination of different shapes and types of stones is one of the hallmarks of quality jewellery of this era. This attractive little comb is very wearable in a contemporary hairstyle and looks very glamorous in a contemporary hairstyle, as seen on the mannequin.

Size: 2 x 2 ins (approx 5 x 5 cms)

Egyptian Head Design Side Comb

Ref: VT-0905-003

This is an interesting example of a personal ornament inspired by a blockbuster movie. In 1965 the film Cleopatra starring was one of the most expensive and controversial ever made. Starring the then still young and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor as the siren of the Nile it inspired a widespread fashion for hairdressing and jewellery in the Egyptian style. This little side comb is made entirely in antiqued metal and features the head of a pharaoh presented amid a background of flowers.

The final picture is taken from a contemporary movie still and shows a montage of images of the star in her exotic and colourful costumes.
