This handsome vintage Spanish mantilla comb or peinita can be worn with a lace mantilla veil to produce an authentic effect, as seen on the mannequin.

It is made from celluloid faux tortoiseshell and probably dates from the mid 20th century. The rounded heading has an attractive scalloped profile.

The design is an unusual one depicting a vase from which emerge a collection of flowers and leaves, placed against a lattice background.

Early 20th Century Faux Tortoiseshell Mantilla Comb

This handsome Spanish mantilla style hair comb or peinita probably dates from the early Art Deco period of the period 1910-20. It has a rectangular shaped heading with a lacy openwork design which suggests foliage and organic forms. Placed in the centre is the iconic sunray motif which was a favourite one during the Art Deco period.

Vintage Faux Tortoiseshell Mantilla Comb

This very large and handsome Spanish mantilla style hair comb or peinita  probably dates from the mid 20th century onwards. It has a wedge shaped heading with a solid centre panel. This has a top border of meandering scrollwork with leaf and foliage forms. The design is unusual.

This comb can be worn with a mantilla veil for those who like a high and exaggerated effect which can be seen on the mannequin.

Oversize Faux Tortoiseshell Mantilla Comb

Ref: MA-0901-002

This is a huge and really outrageous faux tortoiseshell celluloid mantilla comb or peinita of exaggerated size. When worn with a mantilla veil it produces a very high, narrow and exaggerated effect as seen on the mannequin.

This is not a comb for the faint hearted! The comb has a high wedge shaped heading which is a little unusual in having a solid centre and only the top panel pierced. This pierced section shows a classic leaf and scroll pattern.

The final photograph is taken from a contemporary photograph of a Spanish lady dressed for church.

Butterfly Design Faux Tortoiseshell Mantilla Comb

Ref: MA-0901-003

This attractive faux tortoiseshell effect mantilla comb or peinita probably dates from the mid to later 20th century. It has a medium high rectangular heading which produces a moderate effect when worn with the mantilla veil.

The asymmetrical openwork design features figural butterflies amid foliage. This is a slightly unusual theme and suggests a date in the 1970s.

The final photograph is taken from a coloured postcard of the early 20th century.
