Vintage Tibetan Handmade Hair Pins

Ref: ET-0208-003

This is a pair of pretty handmade silver tone single pronged hairpins made by ethnic Tibetan tribe’s people living in what is now China. They exhibit the great tradition of hand workmanship of the Tibetan peoples and are made in delicate openwork filigree.

Each hairpin has a different style but they both show formalised representations of butterflies, which are favourite motifs in Oriental and Asian art. Butterflies are symbolic of the transience of human life.

These ornaments are made from a non-tarnishing alloy popularly called Tibetan Silver. However the metal does not contain any genuine silver, or is of far too low a grade to qualify as sterling, so is something of a misnomer.

Size: 7 x 1 ½ ins (approx 18 x 4 cms)

Japanese Hair Comb Set

Ref: ET-0208-004

This is a vintage Japanese hair comb and hairpin set probably dating from the early to mid 20th century. The comb which is made from some form of synthetic simulating ivory has acquitted a good patina and is decorated with a trailing floral pattern in gold lacquer.

There is some abrasion of the lacquer commensurate with age. In Japanese usage beautifully decorated combs (called kushi) and hairpins (kogai) were  worn in a highly elaborate coiffure..

Size: Comb 3 x 1 ½ ins (approx 7.5 x 4 cms)
        Hairpins 2 ½ ins (approx 6 cms)

£40.00

Jewelled H Comb
Possibly Turkmenistan

Ref: ET-0608-002

This unusual H shaped comb is typical of dressing combs found in Turkey and central Asia. Is may be a piece from Turkmenistan intended for the tourist market and is similar to many others I have seen.

The H form, with two sets of teeth, one finer than the other and strong end guards is a very old form. The basic comb has been hand carved from light wood and the central section has an ornamental silver tone band. This is decorated all over with engraving and is set with faux turquoise and carnelian.

Size: 3¼ x 2¾  ins (approx 8 x y cms)

£25.00

Javanese Gilt Metal Floral Tiara

Ref: ET-1108-012

This handsome and unusual gilt metal tiara comes from the Indonesian island of Java, and would have been worn as part of the traditional dance costume which is illustrated in picture 9. It consists of a band which is fitted with 8 flower and 4 leaf motifs. These are set upon spiral springs in such a manner as to vibrate when the wearer moves.

The springs and the motifs are made from thin hand wrought copper and can be moved or bent to various positions as the wearer desires.

It is difficult to date ornaments of this type since they have been made in the same style for generations but I would place thin in the early to mid 20th century.

Size: 8 ins wide x 4 ins high (approx 20 x 10 cms)

£30.00
