Vintage Japanese Geisha Comb and Hairpin Set

Ref: ET-1208-001

This vintage Japanese geisha set is a particularly fine example of a traditional  comb (kushi) and bodkin type hairpin (kogai) of the type which pulls apart in the centre to enable it to be inserted into the elaborate coiffure. Both are made from blonde tortoiseshell (becco) with elaborate inlay of gold wire and carved mother of pearl.

This kind of inlay is known as radin. The design is a formalised representation of the chrysanthemum or kiku which is the Japanese national flower. It is also the personal device of the Japanese royal family and symbolises endurance and good health.

The illustrations are taken from a book of Japanese hairdressing and show the traditional coiffure at its most elaborate.

Size: Comb 2¼ x 3¾ ins (approx 5.50 x 9.50 cms)
        Hairpin 6 ½ ins (approx 17 cms)

Traditional H Comb with Turquoise Inlay

Ref: ET-1208-002

This is a traditional H shaped comb probably originating in Turkmenistan or Turkey. The comb itself is of softwood with two rows of hand cut teeth, one finer than the other. It is overlaid with a case of silver tone metal with brass inlay and three large oval ornamental turquoise cabochons. The design is the same on both sides.

This is a comparatively simple example of combs from the region; many being entirely engraved all over with elaborate foliate designs.

Size: 3¾ x 3¾ ins (approx 5 x 9.50 cms)

£20.00
